Open Primary Rules

Texas has an open primary system. Here is what that means:

  • You do not register with a political party in Texas. There is no party registration.
  • On Election Day, you choose which party's primary to vote in — Republican or Democratic.
  • You may only vote in one party's primary. You cannot split your ballot between parties.
  • Voting in a primary does not bind you to that party. You can vote for any candidate in the November general election regardless of which primary you voted in.
  • If there is a primary runoff on May 26, you must vote in the same party's runoff as the primary you voted in on March 3.

Voter ID Requirements

Texas requires voters to show an acceptable form of photo ID at the polls. The following are accepted:

  • Texas driver's license
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate (EIC)
  • Texas personal identification card
  • Texas handgun license
  • U.S. military ID with photo
  • U.S. citizenship certificate with photo
  • U.S. passport (book or card)

No photo ID? If you cannot obtain one of the above, you may present a supporting form of ID (voter registration certificate, utility bill, bank statement, government document, or paycheck showing your name and address) and sign a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polls. Voting by Mail

Texas does not have universal mail-in voting. You may only vote by mail if you meet one of these qualifications:

  • You are 65 years of age or older
  • You have a disability or illness
  • You will be outside your county on Election Day
  • You are confined in jail but otherwise eligible to vote

The deadline to apply for a ballot by mail was February 21, 2026. If you already applied, your ballot must be received by the elections office by 7:00 PM on Election Day (or postmarked by Election Day and received within one business day after for most voters).

Election Day Tips

  • 1Bring your photo ID. Make sure it is not expired (IDs expired up to 4 years are accepted for voters 18-69; for those 70+, expired IDs are accepted indefinitely).
  • 2Go to any Bexar County polling location. You are not limited to your precinct. Pick the location most convenient for you.
  • 3Choose your primary at the door. When you arrive, you will be asked which party's primary you want to vote in. Decide in advance.
  • 4Review your sample ballot beforehand. Know the races and candidates before you go. Lines are shorter when voters are prepared.
  • 5Polls are open 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. If you are in line by 7:00 PM, you will be allowed to vote even if it takes additional time.
